Patch Test in Contact Dermatitis

Abstract
Author performed a patch test in 316 patients with contact dermatitis from June 1985 to February 1989 at Department of Dermatology, College of Medicine, Chung-Ang University. Among 316 patients, 203 patients were tested using Hollister-Stier standard battery and 113 patients using European standard battery.
The results were as follows.
1) 49 patients were male (15.5%) and 267 patients were female (84.5%).
2) Age distributions were 39.5% in third decade, and 22.5% in fourth decade.
3) The most common involved sites were face (55.4%), neck (15.5%), hand (8.5%) and arm (8.5%). 4) MOHL index was 15.5-5.8-8.5-0.
5) Positive reaction was noted in 99 patients (48.8%) in Hollister-Stier standard battery, and in 49 patients (43.4%) in European standard battery.
6) In Hollister-Stier standard battery, the most common allergens were Ammoniated mercury chloride (20.7%), Fragrance mix (8.9%), Thimerosal (7.9%), p-Phenylenediamine (7.4%), and Nickel sulfate (6.9%).
7) In European standard battery, the most common allergens were Nickel sulfate (15.9%), Fragrance mix (10.6%), Cobalt chloride (8.0%), Ammoniated mercury chloride (7.1%) and Potassium dichromate (6.2%).
There was little difference between Hollister-Stier standard battery and European standard battery. High positive rate of cosmetic and metal allergens represents that many objects were young female.
